Coup d’etat (French for “punch to the state”)—a take-over of a government system, claiming power for oneself instead: a very quick revolution

Blockade—“blocking” trade out from and into another country by creating a barrier of warships

Guerrillas (Spanish for “little war(rior)s”)—using “sneak attacks” instead of using a full army to attack an enemy—this was seen as “dishonorable” compared with an army facing another army directly

“Scorched-Earth Policy”—destroying one’s own resources to ensure that the enemy does not later use them
